Many layers of lacquer are painted to give a three-dimensional feeling
Part of the dragon's body is painted by mixing powdered gold into the lacquer
The dragon eyes and nails are made by attaching pieces of abalone shell
The dragon scales are hand-painted with pure gold
The clouds are made by painting an undercoat in lacquer,
then sprinkling with gold or silver powder, and layering amber colored lacquer on top, then polishing
Gold and silver in the clouds is made by pasting on 0.01mm cut gold
Flames are depicted by mixing gold and silver with red pigment

Makie is a technique in which a lacquer undercoat is painted and then the piece is sprinkled

This technique was developed during the Heian period [794 – 1185],
and it is said to be unique to Japan.
In addition to the planar representation, blurry images made with powders are also beautiful.
