For a volleyball player, a forward-bent posture is the standard.  “Obviously I stretched before and after practice or matches. But because I got into the habit of leaning forward, my body would huddle up really easily, and in my day to day life I had this bad posture. My neck, my shoulders, even my shoulder blades would get stiff, and when I was sleeping it was hard to breathe… In order to get a good sleep, even now before I go to bed I can’t afford to skip a few stretches to open up my chest. But just for myself, more than anything I wanted a pillow that would fit me, and help with how worried I was about my posture, so I asked sports scientist and trainer Kazumi Suga for help. It took a year, but we finally made something I could be satisfied with.”

Suga tells us, “There are many varieties of stretches that will correct a forward-bent posture, but the simplest, and most effective one is to open the chest.” Opening the chest will alleviate the tension in the pectoral and sternomastoid muscles often seen in modern people, and helps place the dorsal muscles and the neck in their natural position.
