Petrified wood is fossil tree: at least hundreds of millions of years ago, tress were quickly buried underground; wooden part was exchanged by the SiO₂ in groundwater, then became fossils. It reserved the wooden structure and the texture of the trees. It is usually in color of light yellow, yellowish brown, brown, reddish brown, gray white, dark gray, etc. Its polished surface can be as light as vitreous luster. It is opaque or slightly transparent. Because the texture of silicified wood partly presents jade texture, it is also called silicified wood or fossil jade.

Petrified wood usually has much cracks or gaps, and some places in wood fossil is padded and replaced by other substances, like by agate. These are all forms of natural products through long years, but not artificially filled results. So, it should be regarded as the wonders instead of defects.

Mystics in the west say that it is wonder that originally rotten wood became immortal stone after replacement by quartz, so they think petrified wood has characteristics of longevity, eternity and energy.  Petrified wood has gathered the spirit of heaven and earth and the essence of the sun and the moon, which is a precious gemstone set wood, stone and jade in one.
