In a zinc–manganese dioxide dry battery, the zinc can is the negative terminal through which the electric current flows into the device. The zinc is oxidised according to the following half-equation.
Zn(s) → Zn2+(aq) + 2 e− [E° = -0.7626 volts] The positive terminal is a mixture of chemicals – usually a mixture of manganese dioxide powder, carbon and an electrolyte to increase the electrical conductivity.
