"Stoats Tail" it is a British fly pattern which has many variations. Stoat's tail is originally tied with black tip of Stoats tail but now its more popular as a hairwing fly pattern. Stouts tail is a simple fly pattern but has proven itself as one of the most successful fly fishing flies in Scotland. Its among best flies when fishing in low water conditions during the summer or autumn. Stout's tail is among the best flies when fishing close to the surface of the river. Often salmon will attack the fly when its stipped fast across the pool and in low water conditions it should be used in smaller sizes. Stout's tail is also used in high water conditions with great success but then in larger sizes. A salmon fly that no angler should be without when fly fishing for atlantic salmon.
Tip: salmon flies that have proven to be also successful for sea trout
Stout's tail is fantastic when water is crystal clear during mid summer and often in low water conditions but has also proven itself in high water conditions. The Icelandic friend Hugh Falkus once said; "Of all hair-wing salmon flies for late spring and summer fishing with floating line, the simpleStoat's Tail is one of the best we have."
Stout's tail is originally tied as a long shank treble and was almost in every fisherman fly box in the river Dee and don in Aberdeenshare. Since this fly pattern has been around for a long time there are many variations of this fly pattern around.
