4, How does the air source heat pump work?
Air source heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over long periods than conventional boilers. They transfer the heat energy from the ambient air to supply the room heating, air conditioning and domestic use hot water by the refrigeration cycle. They may need to be left on all day and night during the winter in order to heat your home efficiently, the control system will do this automatically and there will be no need for manual intervention.
5, What is the lowest outside operational temperature limit?
The Heat Pumps can normally operate as low as -15°c, and the heat pumps equipped with the EVI compressor can even operate until ~-25°c. They will not stop working and will continue to provide hot water but as temperatures drop so will the efficiency, in severe weather conditions and at a predetermined point the back-up heater or secondary boiler will generate additional heating capacity to maintain the required temperature.
6, Can Heat Pumps be installed with my existing radiators?
Yes, in many cases, existing radiators which were sized for 65 – 70°c water are heavily over-sized and can be used with a lower water temperature, particularly if the property has had insulation improvements such as double glazing, loft and cavity wall insulation. It may be necessary to fit additional or larger, newer radiators in some cases.
7, Can an air source heat pump be used in conjunction with other technologies?
Yes, with suitable control systems, air source heat pumps can be operated to act in either a lead or support mode with any other fossil or renewable heating technology. This needs to be highlighted at the survey and built into the specification particularly where solar thermal is already installed. If solar PV panels are installed this can make an ideal package by producing cheap electricity and using it to heat your home with and Air Source Heat Pump.
8, What are the main operation functions on the controller?
The controller has several levels, and many settings are set by the installer to match the heating needs of your property. The main user settings are for the householder is: on/off, space heating operation, water heating operation, schedule timer programming and room temperature. Additional room thermostats can be added in some installations
9, Are Heat Pumps easy to service and maintain?
Once fitted you can virtually forget about an air source heat pump because the technology is so intelligent that minimal maintenance is required; fit and forget! There are no burners and no flues to maintain and the refrigeration gases and compressor are in a sealed system.
10, How long will a heat pump last?
Most manufacturers are stating 15 years for an Air Source system. As they are usually exposed to the elements this may vary depending on their location but are certainly expected to have a longer life than the gas boilers.
