FAQ

1.What is Liuli?

Liuli is a Chinese title, it is similar with casting glass, crystal sculpture, pate de verre, colored glaze.

Liuli consists strictly of man-made crystal, utilizing a special lost wax casting technique where the crystal glass components are heated to nearly 1000 degrees Celsius,

thus becoming a liquid.This liquid flows into a plaster mold.

The process is called lost-wax casting because the molds are made by encasing
wax sculptures in plaster and then melting away the wax. The result is crystal clear
products with fine shapes and magical color formations, each having its own unique
characteristics.

2. What is Liuli's history?

Lost-wax  casting originated from ancient China or Egypt. The technique failed to be handed down because of its high complexity. Henry Cros rediscovered the recipe and devoted his life to researching the method and eventually making it work. His 1886 work is in the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York.

Henry Cros named this type of artwork "pate de verre" because the piece is semi-transparent. "Pate de verre" means "glass pastry", which is today's Liuli. This name has lasted until now, and English has adopted the same name from its French origin. "Pate de verre" has since attracted many more artists to work in the field. Daum Inc., established in 1878, has been making "pate de verre" for the last 100 plus years and is the oldest company in the field. There are now hundreds of artists in Europe and North America, such as Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova.

3. How to take care of Liuli products?

(1) Prevent contact with other objects to avoid scratches.

(2) Keep at a constant temperature avoiding sudden temperature changes.

Avoid partial heating or cooling.

(3) If placement surface is slippery, a mat, or piece of cloth may be useful.

(4) To keep surface clear and shiny, wipe with a dry cloth or mineral water.

(5) Avoiding contact with strong acidic and corrosive gases.

4. Why are there bubbles in the products? Can they be avoided?

The lost-wax casting process uses a high temperature, but lower than the temperature

used in producing white crystal.  As a result, when the liquid glass flows into the plaster

mold, bubbles in the colored glass pieces cannot always escape.  Therefore,

it is quite normal to have bubbles inside Liuli artworks. And of course, artists can take

advantage of the effects as a form of artistic expression as well.

5. Why are there great color variations in the same kind of artworks?

This is the special effect of the de-wax casting process. Every piece of artwork is

hand-made. When it is put into the kiln, different colors mix naturally, resulting in

each piece having nuances of color.

6.  Is it necessary to use lighting?

Because of the material in Liuli, the product shows best under ideal lighting conditions.

However, lighting is not necessary for all pieces or situations.

7. How do you differentiate yourself from other Liuli makers?

We combine Chinese traditional beauty with modern European styles. Furthermore,

we have mastered the Liuli production techniques. Therefore, our products are the best in both quality and style.
