1. What are neodymium magnets?
Neodymium magnets mainly consist of neodymium, iron and boron (NdFeB). Their biggest advantage has to be seen in high holding forces in spite of small volume. As science found out they do not lose their magnetic force even after a thousand years.
2. Why do neodymiums need a coating?
Neodymium is a soft silvery metal that tarnishes in the air. NdFeB is not stable in the air and will oxydise. Without coating the magnet will corrode and break down. There will be built a dust layer on the magnet's surface and its magnetic field will become weaker and weaker. Therefore neodymiums are coated at least three times. If one speaks of 'nickel-coating' it means a triple coating of nickel, copper and nickel, each coating about 4-7 micrometers thick. Don't file, saw, drill neodymiums, and avoid scratches.
3. Where do neodymiums come from?
Wide more than 95% of neodymiums come from China. There is some raw material deposit in Australia, the USA, Brazil, Sri Lanka and India but these deposits are too small to play any role on worldwide market. World is waiting of the beginning of extraction of neodymium in countries of the Russian federation.
4. What does the 'N' and do the numbers mean?
The letter N classifies the magnet as one of neodymium. The numbers give information about energy density (BxH)max in MegaGaußOerstedt. The highest possible grade of magnetisation is N52. In rare cases there newly is a magnetisation of N54 available. If two magnets are of the same size, they can have two different magnetic strengths when magnetised differently, i.e. in N42 and in N50. Sometimes you find letters after the numbers again which give information about the max. operating temperature of the magnet. Standard neodymiums are heat-resistant up to max. 80°C - if heatened higher the magnet will be weakened irreversibly. Magnets with an H can be heatened up to 120°C, SH = 150°C, UH = 180°C, EH = 200°C. M classifies a magnet as more resistant against outer magnetic fields.
