The ken has a tapered spike at the top and a cup at the bottom which is the smallest of the three cups.

The tama is the ball which is attached to the ken and sarado with the end of the string which is tied off with a bead inside the hole located on the opposite pole from where the string enters. The hole is drilled to fit the tama onto the spike at the top of the ken and the sarado keeps the tama from sliding to far down the ken allowing the tama to leave the spike without excessive friction during play.
