Expansion Joints

 

An expansion joint or movement joint is an assembly designed to safely absorb the heat-induced 
expansion and contraction of various construction materials, to absorb vibration, to hold certain parts together, or to allow movement due to ground settlement or earthquakes. They are commonly found between sections of buildings, bridges, sidewalks, railway tracks, piping systems, ships, and other structures.Because expansion joints are installed at a late stage in construction, some of these movements will have at least partly already taken place. Consequently, expansion joints have to facilitate a smaller degree of overall movement than a bearing at the same location.
