The Discription of Roles in Peking Opera

 

Role of Dan

Role of Dan, on e of the major roles, is the general term in Peking Opera for female roles. 

According to a character’s age, social status and personality, Dan falls into specific female

roles like Zhengdan, Qingyi, Huadan, Guimendan, Wanxiaodan, Podangdan, Huashan, 

Daomadan, Wudan, and Laodan.Daomada refers to female characters who perform speech, 

song,dance, and good at martial arts. They always wear short embroidered robes, belts and

feather hat to present afemale general, for instance, Mu Guiying in Tian Men Battle.

 

Role of Jing

Roles of Jing are named differently. One of them is DaMian that refers to a painted face, known 

as Dahualian. Zheng Jing featuresin song, which is also called Changgong Hualian,like Bao 

Zheng in Death Case of Mei, who stares at the criminal when claiming his murder, makes 

statement of solid evidence in the court. He is so strong willed to sentence Chen Shimei to death.

 

Mangpao Chou

Mangpao Chou are the high officials or nobleman roles of a grand air,in embroidered robes and 

jade belt. The refer to the top authority of supreme social positions,who are supercilious with an 

evil heart. Most of them are bag guys of crabbed nature, and act crossly,for example, King Yinzhou

in Jizhou Uprising,King Zhouyou in Gaojing Uprising, King Songkang in Against Song, King Fuchai 

of Wu in Gusa Stage and King Suiyang in Imperial Conspiracy.

 

Role of Sheng

Sheng, a male role,usually a leading one,dates back to Southern Drama of the Song and Yuan 

Dynasties, and equivalent character to Zhengmo in Za Drama of Yuan Dynasty. It develops

into four categories: Laosheng, Xiaosheng, Wai and Mo. By the roles' social status,

personality and performance feature,they fall into more specific groups: 

Laosheng, Wai,Mo, Wusheng and Wawasheng.
