Sodium Lauryl Sulphate was formulated as the chemical to replace all the natural oils in hand made soap for larger and faster production.  Made from petroleum by products, detergents were a cheap alternative with an ability to scour any surface and suds while rinsing clean.  However, detergents strip all the natural oils away from the hair and skin causing eczema and many other skin irritations and conditions.  Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is a nasty ingredient and the reason why some people thing soap is bad.  Have a look at your commercial soap; Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is probably in it.
