High Reflective Mirrors, First Surface Mirrors,front surface Mirrors

A first surface mirror or front surface mirror (also commonly abbreviated FS mirror or FSM) is a mirror with the reflective surface being above a backing, as opposed to the conventional, second surface mirror with the reflective surface behind a transparent substrate such as glass or acrylic.

First Surface Mirrors are aluminized on the surface nearest the incident light. Light is reflected off the mirrored surface and does not pass through any glass, minimizing light loss.

Commercial grade optics are a step above experimental grade items. Commercial grade FS mirrors have are coated with Enhanced Aluminum, with a minimum reflection of 90%, and may increase as high as 95% for certain wavelengths. Surface accuracy is 4-6 wavelengths per inch. All have protected aluminum coatings.
