Crochet hooks can be steel, aluminum, plastic, or bamboo, and they come in many sizes. Choosing the right hook depends on what you want to make.
Step 1
Look for crochet hooks in a thrift store, discount store, or craft store. If you're just getting started in this craft, you may want to buy a set of hooks F through K, since they are the most commonly used hooks for crocheting with yarn. In the U.S., crochet hooks for yarn come in sizes B through Q. The closer the letter is to A, the smaller the hook is.
Step 2
Choose aluminum crochet hooks if you want them to be durable. Plastic and wood crochet hooks may crack. Some people prefer wooden hooks, however, because they are not as slippery.
Step 3
Read the label on the yarn if you already selected the yarn for a project. The label will tell you which size hook you need to buy. But remember that people crochet with different tensions. Therefore, it's helpful to also have a hook one size larger and one size smaller than recommended, in case you need it to get the right gauge for the project.
Step 4
Buy smaller steel hooks if you want to crochet with thread. Projects like doilies and other fine lacy items, like snowflakes or bookmarks, may require thread. The steel hooks range from size 14 to 00. With steel crochet hooks, a smaller number means a larger hook.
