Bunian Tu is a Painting of Emperor Taizong Receiving the Tibetan Envoy, and now as Yan Liben's representative work, it is one of the top ten famous Chinese paintings. The whole painting with smooth lines, magnificent colour and irregular composition of a picture had left very precious historical and artistic values.
The painting depicts a historical episode early in the Tang dynasty (618-907). In the seventh century, the thirty-second chieftain of Tubo (present-day Tibet), the valiant and wise leader Songzan Ganbu, sent his envoy to Chang'an (capital of the Tang, today's Xi'an) to propose a marriage. The Emperor Taizong (r. 627-649) consented to the proposal and promised to give Princess Wencheng in marriage to him. In the spring of 641, Ludongzan, the envoy sent by Songzan Ganbu, arrived at the court to escort the princess back to Tubo to be the queen. Princess Wencheng took with her not only Tang dynasty customs and ritual practices, but also large retinues of craftsmen which had the effect of stimulating the Tubo tribal economy and culture. Thereafter, the Tang Empire and the Tibetan region stayed on good terms for quite a while.
