Laminated glass is produced by permanently bonding two pieces of glass together with a tough plastic interlayer (polyvinyl butyral) under heat and pressure.
The interlayer material is invisible when viewed through the glass. With glass on either side, the finished lite is indistinguishable from monolithis glass when installed in a frame. Most often, laminated glass is produced from annealed glass, but heat strengthened or tempered can be used when special performance needs are required.
Polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) is a resin usually used for applications that require strong binding, optical clarity, adhesion to many surfaces, toughness and flexibility. It is prepared from polyvinyl alcohol by reaction with butyraldehyde. The major application is for laminated safety glass for automobile windshields and constructions.
In case of breakage, the interlayer holds the fragments together and continues to provide resistance to the passage of persons or objects. This glass is particularly suitable where it is important to ensure the resistance of the whole sheet after breakage such as: Shop-fronts, balconies, stair-railings, roof glazing.
There are two types of laminated glass: PVB and resin laminated glass:
PVB laminated glass is two or more sheets of glass which are bonded together with one or more layers (PVB) under heat and pressure to form a single piece.
Resins laminated glass is manufactured by pouring liquid resin into the cavity between two sheets of glass which are held together until the resin cures.
Features:
Laminated glass is formed as s sandwich of 2 sheets of glass bonded to a tough and thermoplastic polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer. It is also a safety material against destroy and theft without frament splashing down when broken.
Applications:
Furniture
Architecture
Windows and skylights
Show windlows and showcases
Water tanks and observation windows of swimming pools
