Fixed storage is like a typewriter – limited in scope and an artifact of the past. Versatility is the latest demand, and portable shelters, such as carports, allow you to keep a vehicle and other investments protected in any location on your property. Be it in the front or back, or with a valance or enclosed style, a carport made from galvanized steel can easily be set up and taken down in several locations. In all instances, the structure will keep your vehicle protected from UV rays and moisture.

Carport kits, which include the frame for the shelter, the canopy, and anchors, come in two varieties. A metal and polyethylene combination is the most common for these outdoor shelters. These carport kits contain a galvanized steel frame and a canopy made from heavy-duty polyethylene, which has been treated to be UV resistant, waterproof, mildew resistant, and rot proof. Such shelters can either be fully enclosed – ideal for long-term and seasonal storage – or they can have a valance style.

Metal carport kits are another option. Although these have a fixed structure, the metal frame and canopy have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years. The entire kit, which includes the frame and canopy, is made from galvanized steel; the canopy, exposed directly to the elements, is coated with silicon for additional protection. These carports, however, have a valance style and cannot be enclosed.

Part of using carport kits is assembling the structure, but another – and nearly as significant – is installation. All carport kits come with anchors, which are ideal for temporarily securing the shelter. If you plan to keep the carport outdoors permanently, another option is setting the legs in concrete before adding the structure to the ground. In either instance, the anchorage gives the carport more strength, which is particularly important for withstanding snow, ice, and winds in winter.
