Botanical Name: Alkanna Tinctoria or Anchousa Tinctoria which is derived from the Greek word Anchousa meaning paint.
Common Names: Alkanet Root, Alkanat Root, Ratanjot, Bugloss, Dyers Bugloss Root, Orchanet Root, Spanish Bugloss Root, Batschia Canescens, Hoary Puccoon and Lithospermum Canescens. Uses: Alkanet Roots are largely used as a natural coloring or dyeing agent and it confer a ruby red to purple color depending on the medium it is used with. It is usually used in lip sticks, lip balm, ointments, soap, tinctures,stones, fibers and to fine polish wood such as violins. Alkanet Roots are used in soap to yield a fine red, purple, pink or blue depending on the quantity used and the amount of oil used. It is also used in wines of low quality to improve the taste and give it an aged look to attract the consumers who also admires the taste of wine after bumping it with Alkanet Roots.
