What is the purpose of an air intake hose?

The location, design length and efficiency of an engine's air intake hose can play a huge role in performance and fuel efficiency. Hundreds of intake designs are available to you on the market today, but they all perform essentially the same functions.

Purpose

The engine's air intake hose's primary purpose is to duct air either from the air filter to the engine's throttle body, or from the external air intake location to the air filter.

Design

An ideal air intake would allow the engine unrestricted access to as much clean, cool air as it can use.

Construction

Most air intakes are smooth hoses made of rubber or aluminum that connect to the throttle body (main engine air-valve) on one end and the air filter on the other.
