Why is cashmere so expensive?
It takes one of the rare goats four years to grow enough cashmere for one sweater. Each goat is combed by hand every spring. Then the fleece is collected and sorted by hand. Cashmere sweaters are usually knit in hand operated machines. Hence the scarcity of the fiber and the hand work required to transforming the fiber into a luxurious garment both contribute to the high value of cashmere. There are significant differences in the quality of cashmere fibers, which affect the final product price. Longer fiber is more expensive, because it makes stronger yarn that pills less. Moreover the color of the fiber is also important, the whiter more expensive fiber needs less dye for coloring.
