The design is based on Mt. Fuji, a designated world heritage site.
Mt. Fuji has a special significance for the Japanese people, inspiring feelings of love and reverence.
Inden is a type of leather handicraft made with a unique method of applying designs to soft and
strong deerskin with lacquer devised some time around 1800.
It is said that it was given the name Inden because it was transmitted from India.
During the Sengoku period, it was frequently used on armor and helmets.
In modern times, it is an item that captures traditional artistry and modern design,
and is favored by many.
Manufacturing Process
1. Dyeing
The white deerskin is dyed.
2. Cutting
The skin is cut with a template. Parts with undamaged edges are selected.
3. Patterning
A template is laid over the top, a spatula is brushed across it to stencil it,
then the template is peeled away from the skin, leaving a beautiful design on the deerskin
matching the spaces in the stencil. It is then dried, producing a durable, lustrous lacquer design.
4. Sewing and Finishing
It is cut precisely with a template, and individually sewn.
The lacquer pattern imparts an uneven surface, so the sewing requires skilled technique.
5. Inspection
Only those items which clear a number of stringent checks are affixed with the brand mark and shipped.
Inden mainly has patterns with an elegant air, such as cherry blossoms, dragonflies, grapes, and deer.
