Spherical roller bearings, sometimes termed barrel roller bearings, are single or two row self-aligning roller bearings. They comprise solid outer rings with a concave raceway. They have solid inner rings and a cylindrical or tapered bore and barrel-shaped (aka: spherical) rollers with separator cages. The cages are typically made of steel for high loading or of bronze for smoother performance.

Bearings 22221 is particularly suitable where high radial shock type loads occur and misalignments must be compensated for. Their axial load carrying capacity is relatively small. The oscillating motion of a vibrating screen, used in mining and oil extraction/exploration, is a perfect example of where these bearings come into their own.

Bearings 22221 has two rows of rollers, a common sphered outer ring raceway and two inner ring raceways inclined at an angle to the bearing axis. The centre point of the sphere in the outer ring raceway is at the bearing axis. Therefore, the bearings are self-aligning and insensitive to misalignment of the shaft relative to the housing, which can be caused, for example, by shaft deflection. Spherical roller bearings are designed to accommodate heavy radial loads, as well as heavy axial loads in both directions.
