Product Description

Borated HDPE Sheet:

This material is a product specially designed for nuclear shielding applications. The material employs 5% Boron by weight to shield neutrons in a variety of applications including high intensity X-rays, Cancer Treatment Facilities, Nuclear Submarines, Hospitals and Nuclear Power Plants.

This Material Features:

* 5% Boron by weight

* Replaces lead in nuclear shielding applications

* Lighter weight and lower cost than lead (dramatically easier to install)

Using this material as your shielding will be easier to install, maintain and use than the traditional lead lined products. While using a Polyethylene product may seem unusual, it performs as good or better than the lead weighing many times as much.

Light-weight, cost-effective and durable, borated polyethylene is a great solution for a wide variety of shielding applications. Commonly used for medical, nuclear and industrial neutron shielding, borated polyethylene is ideal for medical vaults and doors for linear particle accelerators, as well as other radiation and research applications, including nuclear reactors and construction of nuclear-powered vessels.

Key Features of Borated Polyethylene:

• Available with 1%, 2% and 5% boron content (by weight) or virgin formulas.

• Made from the finest polymers available.

• High cross-section for consistent neutron attenuation.

• Durable over a wide temperature range.

• Standard sheet size is 48”x96”x1” (1219 mm x 2438 mm x 25.4 mm), approximate weight is 160 lbs (72.57 kg).

• Custom sheets, blocks and slabs also available.

• Available finishing options, including custom cutting into any shape or part.

Benefits of Borated Polyethylene:

• Reduce exposure to harmful neutron radiation

• Light-weight; easy to handle and install

• Easily fabricated using standard woodworking tools

• Cost-effective

TRENDS

Nuclear and medical radiation shielding applications require materials providing safety and protection for environment and people, exhibiting high hydrogen density and low weight at acceptable cost.

Most radiation fields are combinations of different kinds of radiation, such as fast neutrons, thermal neutrons,

primary gamma and secondary gamma rays.

Fast neutrons are most effectively shielded by materials with high hydrogen content. They are slowed to

thermal energies by collision with hydrogen atoms. Thermal neutrons can be virtually eliminated by the

presence of high thermal neutron cross-section materials such as boron. Primary gamma rays are best

shielded with lead or other high density materials. Secondary gamma rays are created as the result of the

capture of thermal neutrons by hydrogen. These capture-gamma rays can be minimized by adding boron.

Product Materials

Polyethylene (PE) is the most commonly used plastic polymer in the world with annual consumption rates exceeding 50 billion pounds per year. Over 70 percent of Porex products use polyethylene.

With a linear molecular structure of repeating –CH2-CH2-units, PE is a semi-crystalline polymer that elongates before breaking, enhancing its toughness. In general, PE is considered a strong, lightweight thermoplastic with very good chemical resistance. Products made from standard polyethylene grades typically have pore size diameters ranging from 7 to 150 micrometers, but these nominal values can be increased to 300 micrometers with special blends.

HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE)

Porex high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is available in sheets, rods, tubes and molded shapes. HDPE can be used in continuous service at temperatures up to 180° F (82° C) and intermittently at 240° F (116° C). If not stressed, it is stable at 212° F (100° C) in continuous service.

ULTRA-HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHYLENE (UHMWPE)

As with high-density polyethylene, Porex ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) comes in sheets, rods, tubes, and molded shapes. UHMWPE is a strong, lightweight material embodying all the characteristics of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plus the added feature of being resistant to concentrated acids and alkalis as well as numerous organic solvents. This material has the same temperature limitations as HDPE. Average pore size in micrometers: 10 and 20.
