About the painting:
In the painting, there is an regal official of Tang Dynasty on the back of the horse. Different from the riding horses pictures of Tang and Song, it reflected some kind of refinement, which combined the heavy colors with the light colors. Zhao made the painting at 43 years old, which represented the his early works.
About the painter:
Zhao Mengfu(1254-1322), was a prince and descendant of Song Dynasty, a Chinese scholar, painter and calligrapher during the Yuan Dynasty, who was appreciated by the Shizu of Yuan Dynasty. His regular script was called “Zhao Script”. He called on that the arts of poetry, painting and calligraphy should be joined together to express the artists’ feeling.
