Mac Motor for ebike

Here is the brief introduction of MAC geared hub motor:

The Mac Motor is a High Power, High Torque, Geared Hub Motor intended for Spoked Bicycle wheels from 16” to700C. Rated Output power is typically between 500 to 1000W depending upon the motor winding selected and the operating voltage. An internal 5:1 planetary gear with clutch is implemented. New stronger Composite Gears are now standard on the 500W motors to ensure a long trouble free life. The gear reduction allows the motor to spin at a higher and more efficient rpm greatly improving the starting torque and hill climbing ability when compared with comparable Direct-Drive motors, whilst also being smaller and lighter than a comparable DD motor. The clutch offers minimal drag when not under power. Unlike the majority of geared motors on the market, the Mac 500W is built for the high power demands of the US market, not the highly restricted EU market. The slower wound versions could still be used and stay within the EU speed limit, for those requiring more hill climbing ability than the typical 250W motors can offer.

The Mac motor uses a 32 magnet, 16 pair pole motor unlike the vast majority of Geared motors on the Market which use an 8 pair pole motor. This further improves torque, but does mean that the electrical rpm or commutation frequency is higher than typical geared motors and much higher than Direct-Drive motors, so some care with controller selection is required. The available space for the disk is a little limited at 15mm between the side casing and the inner face of the disk, so some care when selecting a suitable caliper is required or some spacing of the disk away from the side cover and possibly modification of the caliper mounting may be required for some models of disk brake caliper. The Mac 500W rear motor allows both disk brake and 7 speed freewheel to be used on the standard 135mm dropout, which many of the small 250W geared motors cannot achieve. The front 500W Mac motor is now available with disc brake and is compatible with standard 100mm fork dropout.

Specification:

6 turn high speed motor - 400rpm loaded at 36V, 520rpm loaded at 48V

8 turn standard motor - 320rpm loaded at 36V, 400rpm loaded at 48V

10 turn torque motor - 255rpm loaded at 36V, 320rpm loaded at 48V

12 turn low speed extra torque motor - 200rpm loaded at 36V, 250rpm loaded at 48V

Accepts disk brake and 7 speed freewheel with standard 135mm rear dropout.

As a guideline you can expect approximately the following real world speeds for the above windings on 12S LiFePO4 battery pack (approximately 38V under load) in a 26" rim on the flat, no pedaling with a rider plus bike weight of approximately 130kg total (286pounds):

6T - 45kph (36v), 65kph (48v)

8T – 39kph (36v) , 50kph (48v)

10T – 32kph (36v) , 40kph (48v)

12T – 25kph (36v) , 32kph (48v)

Product Introduction

The Front Wheel version of the Mac motor is quite tight to the fork on the non-disc side of the motor. Please refer to the drawings listed below to confirm the motor outline will match your fork.

Note: Battery-Fed Shipping MUST be used for shipments including a battery. Lead time for Batteries is ~2 weeks, prior to shipping (if the battery is not built, in stock). Battery-Fed shipping typically requires up to 2 weeks shipping time.

Upgrade Mac motor (includes upgrade stator and temp sensor) in a built Alex wheel rim of your choice using 13G Sapim Spokes. See Upgrade Mac Kit for more information.

20A 6fet 3077 Programmable Infineon Controller (current reduced due to battery limitations) with matching throttle, 3 speed and Cruise, as well as a bar mounted power switch and a choice of ebrakes.

48V Frame Pack and charger with a choice of Capacity Options.

Interconnections between the Motor, Controller, all Accessories and the Battery are plug and play.

The combined cost for the kit with battery is at a reduced rate compared to purchasing the items individually. Additional accessories such as suitable Freewheel, Disc Spacer, Torque Arm and Cycle Analyst are offered at reduced rates compared to purchasing separately.

The combination of controller, battery and motor have been selected to ensure all parts are suitably matched and working within the recommended limits. Instead of offering choices for motor windings, we have offered a range of typical cruising speeds that can be expected on the flat. We will try our best to provide a motor that will meet or exceed the requested speed.

Please note:

There is limited space for the Disc Brake Calliper when using the Mac Motor (15mm clearance only). This means that many better quality and/or Hydraulic Disc Callipers may foul the Motor. So we offer a 2.5mm thick disc spacer to enable more clearance. Another option is to convert to 203mm Disc. With a larger Disc installed, the Calliper can clear the hub and avoid these clearance issues. See: Mac 500W Rear Motor Outline and Mac 500W Front Motor Outline. Please ensure you understand this point and take measures to overcome any possible issues.

The Mac motor uses a screw on freewheel, it cannot use a cassette. The 11T DNP are popular as it allows you to pedal to a higher speed. The Mac can accept a 7 speed without any additional spacers (135mm axle width). If 8, 9 or 10 speed are used, a spacer of ~4mm is required and the axle width will increase to ~139mm (spacer will be provided). Difference between a Freewheel and a Cassette.

A Torque Arm is not absolutely essential at this power level, but they are recommended. We offer the full range of Genuine Grin Tech TAs (manufactured in Canada). Choose the appropriate TA according to your motor choice (Front/Rear) and the design of the Fork. See: Rear Rev4, Front Rev3 and Front Rev2 designs. A motor spinout on a front hub motor installation can be particularly unpleasant, so some will opt for dual front TAs. It is recommended only steel front forks are used for a Front Hub Motor installation. A suitably construted DIY Torque Arm is fine. We only recommend you consider this point and take suitable precautions to avoid a motor spinout.

The HWBS Ebrake Sensor allows you to retain your original cable type meachical brakes and brake levers. The HWBS sensor mounts inline with the brake cable and detects when the brake is pulled. HWBS sensor is not suitable for Hydraulic brakes. 1pc HWBS sensor is ordinarily supplied, it is not necessary to have a sensor on both front and rear brakes, 1 is enough in our opinion. Ebrakes are strongly recommended with this Kit as it has a Cruise Function.

When the Upgrade Mac kit is combined with the V3 Cycle Analyst, it opens up the possibility to have Motor Temperature Monitoring and Power Rollback if motor temperature exceeds a programmed limit. It also allows various control functions and PAS Assist devices/modes when combined with the appropriate PAS Device. V2 CA is a simpler device that can still allow on the fly speed, current or power limiting to be accomplished.

The PAS Display/Sensor allows more control over the PAS function that you get with the PAS directly connected to the controller, see listing here for more info.
