Alginate is a non-toxic natural macromolecular materials, it can absorb up to 11 times its own weight in liquid. When alginate contacts with wound exudate, the calcium ion inside the absorbent pad will exchange with the sodium ion in the exudate, then forms hydrosoluble sodium alginate. It forces the exudate to enter the absorbent pad and then forms a layer of hydrogel membrane on the surface of wound.
