Gabions and Rock Mattresses Introduction
The base section of the Gabion Mattresses is divided into compartments and fillled with stones at the project site. With lids secured, Gabions Mattresses form flexible, permeable, monolithic structures.
Gabions and rock mattresses are baskets or cages manufactured from heavily galvanized wire, and also with the addition of a PVC sleeve coating on the core wire.
Gabions and rock mattress is a kind of heavy hexagonal wire netting. It is rectangular galvanized wire baskets filled with stones used as pervious, semiflexible building blocks for slope and channel stabilization. Live rooting branches may be placed between the rock-filled baskets.
Gabions are used to provid a fast and economical solution to building structures for stabilizing slopes and protecting river shoreline from erosion. Gabion retaining walls are ideal for use in areas of unfavourable soil conditions as they are more flexible than rigid concrete retaining wall structures are less prone to cracks, fractures and failure.
All the physical and mechanical properties of gabion mattresses meet or exceed the requirement of ASTM A975-97 and EN10223-3.

Specification of Wire Material
(1) Low carbon steel wire (as per EN10218-2) and PVC coated wire.
(2) Regular Galvanized 30-50g and Heavy Galvanized 240-300g (as per EN10244-2 Class A).
(3) Befor or after PVC coated (as per EN10245-2).
(4) Galfan. 95% Zinc 5% Aluminum, 90% Zin 10% Aluminum - Wire diameter 1.0mm-3.0mm. Tensile strength >450 Mpa.

The wire diameter is basis on the different sizes of hexagonal. If the wire is zinc coated the wire diameter should be 1.8-4.0mm, if it is PVC coated, the wire should be 3.0-4.5mm. The slevedge mesh wire diameter should be thicker one size gauge than the body mesh wire.
