Kohgen Koh Cafe`s Original ceramic incense burner celadon porcelain, seto ware

This incense burner is original product of our store.

Within an hour drive from our main store in Nagoya, there is a Seto city which is famous for its ware (which is called Seto ware) and chinaware.
That is where we have created those incense burners with attention to the details. They were made with the selection of few kinds of Seto traditional pottery techniques, to be easy to hold and to prevent from heat as much as possible.

Those incense burners have been created with the commitment to both aesthetics and usability, so they can be easily used by people who are burning incenses for the very first time.

With our shop’s commitment to producing an incense burner which is resistant to heat, we wanted the bottom and inside part, which is usually hidden with the ash, to be free of the glaze.

We also paid the attention to its weight.

To not feel the weight of the ware too much, and on the other hand, for an incense burner to not to be too light, we have adjusted its thickness.

And finally, the color. We have created up to 11 colors for you to choose your favorite.

WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF FRAGRANCE

Koh-do (“Way of Incense”) is the Japanese art of appreciating incense. It has been known for over 1000 years and recognized as elegant and refined. It is important part of poetry and classical literature of Japan.

Incense burning is a source of inspiration. It brings inner peace and spiritual freedom to the mind.

There are two major types of incense in Japan.

Indirect-burning incense, which can be smoldering piece of fragrant wood, and direct-burning incense in a form of stick or cone, made from incense paste without a bamboo core.

Kohgen is selling exactly those types of Japanese Incense.

Since there is no bamboo core and incense is made from pure incense material, you can enjoy pure fragrance without underlying scent of burning wood.

g

The process of making Japanese incense:

Blending the finest natural ingredients and binding them with the powder of Tabu-koh, the bark of Tabu-no-ki. Tabu-no-ki is Japanese huge bay tree (Machilus thunbergii), which belongs to Laurel family. After such combination is mixed with water it is extruded just like spaghetti, and then allowed to dry in a form of solid sticks of pure incense.

About Aloeswood

  About aloeswood

f

In Japan aloeswood is seen as a sacred and important wood. It is one of the most distinguished ingredients of some Japanese incense.

During the Kamakura period (1185-1333) the Japanese began using various raw woods such as aloeswood in the making of incense. Some incense was used in a recreational way while others were used in the most important of religious ceremonies. This led to a classification system for grading the qualities of aloeswood. The very finest quality aloeswood is referred to as Kyara. Good quality aloeswood fetches very high prices and this is reflected in the prices of the highest quality aloeswood incenses. f

Aloeswood is also an important wood in the Middle East and in many places is burned daily to accompany prayer. It is also known as agarwood, eaglewood, oud or gaharu

The wood itself has no significant aroma. Aloeswood is obtained from the evergreen daphne genus tree. When a fungus infects the tree a resin begins to form. When the trees dies this resin continues to harden and mature. This resin imbued wood is then collected for incense and burning purposes.

In Japan it is considered a great honour to receive a gift of fine aloeswood or Kyara.f
